Titans slog their way to great finishes at state

Lady Titans Clinch Best Finish Ever with 3rd Place at State; Boys' Finish 5th

On a Carrollton course battered by several weeks of rain, North Oconee's Lady Titan squad of sophomores and juniors claimed their highest finish in state ever on Saturday, taking third. This makes 6 top-five team finishes for the team since 2008. Junior Mackenzie Morse was 8th overall, clocking 21:43. Sophomores Gabby Huff-Streiter (17th in 22:16) and Kate Mattison (34th in 22:45) followed. Junior Hollis Brown ran 51st in 23:31, and sophomore Sophie Brown took 55th in 23:34. Sophomore Courtney Jones (67th in 23:53) and Melanie Bowden (79th in 24:24) rounded out the top seven. 

In the boys' race, Thomas Moore finished a stellar senior season with 12th place (17:48). Junior Anthony Potts was next for the Titans (22nd in 18:10). Seniors Harper Sigler (38th in 18:33) and Andrew Cowick (48th in 18:59) capped their Titan harrier careers. Frosh Brady Kalessa (62nd in 19:23) rounded out the top five, as frosh Dawson Frey (63rd in 19:23) and sophomore Jacob Ash (66th in 19:24) contributed varsity scores. Since 2009 the boys' team has six top-five state finishes. 

The teams added Clarke-Oconee and Region 8-AAAA championships to their season accomplishments.

Titans clean house as they sweep region titles

North Oconee Runners Capture Region Championships at Unicoi; Thomas Moore earns 6th individual win

In perhaps the most competitive cross country region in the state, North Oconee's boys squeaked by North Hall by a mere point (48-49) as the girls took a 4-point win (58-62) over White County, who had nudged the Lady Titans by one point at last year's region meet. 

Moore held off Johnson's Gerardo Suarez with a time of 15:46. Harper Sigler secured a spot on the First Team All-Region squad with a 7th place finish (16:28). Anthony Potts was one spot back (8th; 16:42). Andrew Cowick and Dawson Frye had strong finishes (15th; 17:02 and 17th; 17:03, respectively). Brady Kalessa (21st; 17:17) and Jacob Ash (22nd; 17:18) rounded out the Titan top seven. 

Mackenzie Morse led the Lady Titans with 3rd overall in 19:43. Gabby Huff-Streiter earned First Team All-Region distinction with 5th place in 19:54. Hollis Brown (14th; 20:53) and Kate Mattison (15th; 20:54) formed a formidable pack. Melanie Bowden scorched the course in 21:14 (21st). Anna Cobb (23rd; 21:29) and Courtney Jones (26th in 21:53) contributed varsity scores. 

The Titans claimed first individual runners in both JV races as Allie Dominical (21:38) led a 1-2-3 Lady Titan finish; Austin Joost clocked 17:47 in leading the boys' field. 

Anna Marie Garmon (22:03) was second with Peyton Coates third (22:31). Amy Gayer (8th; 23:27) and Rachel Sigler (9th; 23:51) took team top-five spots. Christa Lynn Moore (10th; 24:01) and Maggie Morris (12th; 24:10) chipped in top-seven finishes. 

Joost got support from Jon Hobus (16th in 19:00), Colin McCormick (33rd; 19:48), Franco Plathottathil (36th; 19:58), Ryan Roddy (42nd,, 20:06),Nicholas Schuff (49th; 20:22) and Cole Lannon (50th, 20:24) in the JV race. 

The Titan teams will compete in the state meet in Carrollton on Sat., Nov 7. The boys' AAAA race is 12:00 noon, with the girls' race to follow at 12:40 p.m.
